According to an article by the Christian Post, a group of Hindu extremists stormed a church gathering in India’s Uttar Pradesh state breaking up the meeting. The attackers falsely accused the Christians of forcing Hindus to convert to Christianity. The police became involved and took the pastor and three other Christians away to the police station. After being in custody for six hours they were finally released on bail. But before they were officially released a drunk police officer came up and started beating them. He beat them until they collapsed on the floor all the time yelling obscenities at them. He even made some of them pose like Jesus on the cross, so that he could get the feeling, he was beating Jesus.
This kind of persecution has become more and more common in India. According to the article, “Attacks on Christians have been on the rise since Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party took office as prime minister in 2014.” As Christians, we shouldn’t be surprised when we hear about persecution. Jesus told us in John 15:18-21
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
We should expect persecution for the name of Christ. Persecution also shouldn’t stop us from spreading the Gospel. We need more people in India to be bold to share the Gospel even in the face of persecution. Will you pray for God to give boldness to the Indian believers. Will you pray for God to give boldness to the missionaries and pastors serving in India? Would you pray for God to send more laborers to take the Gospel to India?
