Latin America News: US deportations increase Guatemalan COVID-19 cases

Written by Jordan Cooke, OG Intern in Peru

As we continue to hear updates from Latin American countries about the COVID-19 situation, I can only think of how much work there is to be done for the sake of the gospel. Since March, Guatemala has been receiving flights from the US containing many deportees. According to a presidential spokesman, 50-75% of these deported Guatemalans have tested positive for the coronavirus. The Guatemalan government states that since receiving these flights from the US, the number of COVID-19 positive cases have increased.

President Alejandro Giammattei pleaded that no more than 25 migrants be sent back per flight. The US government has since sent back 76 and 106 people consecutively. Guatemala currently has 316 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and eight deaths.

As this epidemic continues to grow and spread, more and more people are dying without knowing Christ. Eight people have already lost their lives to the virus, but where will they spend eternity? The world is feeling lost, scared, and hopeless. We have the good news that can bring them comfort, joy, security, and eternal life with Christ. What will you do to help people in Guatemala and Latin America hear the gospel message?
